CHAPTER 1

The First Rain of Spring

Gallia

Friday, March 17th, 2017

The sky was still cloudy this afternoon, just like the past few days. But she was glad there’s no rain today –not yet- and that she could sit on one of the benches behind the dorm. There are sketchbook and pencil on her hand while the earphones on her ears played the music player from her phone. She chose to stay at this place, hidden from everyone and to get away from the crowd of the other residents who were busy preparing the welcome party for the new residents in Gallia.

As the sky getting darker, the air also felt colder and she had to wear her sweater. She reached for the thermos on her bag and poured the hot tea on the lid of the thermos. The aroma of mint and vanilla greeted her and immediately put a smile on her adorable face. Despite the cold weather, she felt warm.

She has been drawing on the sketchbook since an hour ago, along with the music player accompanied her. But she still feels bored. She decided to talk a walk to the rose garden not too far from the dorm. Ignoring the consequence of getting her clothes and her shoes dirty, she squatted down and began to clean the dried leaves from the rose. Every now and then, she would push back her long hair to the back of her ear. The smile on her face getting wider when her fingers touched the rose petals that bloomed so beautifully.

She always likes all beautiful things. She likes nature and the landscape. Those always make her calm and feel comfortable. Back then when she lived in Osaka, she always spent the weekend with the nature club students. She would go hiking and camping under the sky on her own when she felt stuffed from her daily activities. But now she moved to Seoul, she has to change her habits. From the adventurous girl to the sweet and quiet one who spends more time in her dorm backyard. A year passed and sometimes she asked herself why she left her friends and her life back in Japan. She knows the answer to it: she never wanted the new life she has, but she has no option as an accident happened and she had to return to Korea. And that’s the only thing that makes her accept the fact that she’s “different” from other people on her age.

For a moment, she enjoyed her time in the middle of the rose garden, forgetting her surroundings. Her lips unconsciously humming the voice of Richard Marx’s Right Here Waiting. She chuckled, realizing how old her taste is comparing with her young age. Well, she’s the youngest in the dorm for now. She could only blame the people she spent a lot back then for her favorite type of music (But she still likes it).

Without her knowing the rain drops began to fall and wet her smooth skin. She looked up at the dark sky with open arms. This afternoon, she let her palm touch the drizzle. But soon she stood up and her eyes looked around looking for something she could use to protect the rose garden. She could only sigh when she didn’t find anything to protect her favorite place. Once again, she crouched and touched the rose petals. Carefully her fingers moved to touch the fragile but thorny flower stem. But it still looks sturdy even though it is now touched by rain.

The first rain of spring.

Unconsciously she smiled, realizing that this afternoon rain would not destroy the rose garden which was blooming before her.

“Hey!”

One voice shocked her and made her fingertips stuck to the thorns on the stem of the rose she was holding. She bit her lip and held back the groan that came from her lips. Quickly she pulled the stem of the rose, but unfortunately, the tip of the horn was broken and left on the tip of her finger. She hissed, irritated by what happened. Usually, she is always careful not to get hurt and attract attention. But it seems like this time–

“Do you know where the way to the hall is? I’m lost.”

The voice took over her attention. Make the girl ignore the wound and stand up from her position. She turn around and stare at a figure standing not far from her, waiting for the answer.

A girl with a boyish style stands not far from her. She look uncomfortable with a restless face as if making a mistake. If seen from height and stature that is not much different from her, it seems they are the same age.

“You.. Are you the new residents of this dorm?” The girl asked with a frown.

The question was answered quickly with a nod and a big smile. The childish look with charming eyes and dimples that so naturally appeared on her cheeks when she smiled. She looks calmer when their eyes meet in silence.

“You can go back through the road behind where you stand and—”

“Ah no! Don’t give me the same road from where I came from. Eunbi Unnie will beat me if she finds me. I have to hide at least until she is cooling down. I think this time I really made her angry.”

That answer made the girl’s eyes change, feeling suspicious. Kwon Eunbi is one of her seniors who is known to be patient and very pleasant. She’s one of the leaders in Gallia. The gentle and funny one. If she gets angry, of course, that person really made a mistake that violated the boundary.

“You made a trouble?” She asked with a probing look.

“Ahhhh that’s not it.” The girl waved her hand. “This is just a misunderstanding. I’ll explain later to her.” She returned with an agitated gesture. “But now, I need-”

“YAH! AN YUJIN! WHERE ARE YOU?!”

They heard the voice of Eunbi calling out one name and making the anxiety of the girl she just met more real.

“You.. Are you.. An Yujin?” The girl stared with a flat expression. Trying to hide her smile. Somehow the restless gesture of the tall girl in front of her looked adorable.

Cute.

An Yujin, the girl nodded with a pleading look. Asking for the girl’s help to give her a way out.

“Please..” Yujin look at her with puppy eyes.

“Okay.”

“Thank you, ngg…” Yujin smiled awkwardly. She stared with one question without words.

“Jang Wonyoung.” Yujin didn’t ask but the girl understood the meaning of Yujin’s gaze. “You can go through this path and turn right.” Wonyoung pointed to the path beside the rose garden. “From there, you go straight to find a fork. You can turn right after-“

“Thank you, Jang Wonyoung!” Without waiting for further explanation, Yujin bowed and ran past the path shown.

“Past the second block and go straight to the hall. Yah! That’s wrong move! You’ll go to the hell – Ah! I mean you’ll go to Eunbi Unnie, Miss An!” The girl continued her words even though Yujin couldn’t hear it. “Good luck, then.”

She shrugged her shoulders and returned to the bench. She stares at the wound on the tip of her finger and pulls out the remaining thorns that stick there. She took the water bottle and cleaned the blood that was pouring from the tip of her finger. After that, she looked back at the tip of her finger which was no longer smooth because of the wound. She smiles while shaking her head remembering what just happened.

“You owe me one band-aid, An Yujin.”
