CHAPTER 13

– Syzygy –

Sapphire Corp., Seoul

Wednesday, September 17th, 2025

“T-shirts, hoodies, mugs, pillows, umbrellas, keychains, helmets, puzzles, plushies, tote bags, blankets,” Miss Lee mentioned the list of merchandises they would sell on the release date of the Sapphire Crown series. “I’m fine with all of this, but what do you think about working together with Symphony?”

“Why?” asked Hyewon, confused.

“To ask them to release a mobile phone with Sapphire Crown as the theme,” Miss Lee grinned as she reached for her phone and contacting someone. She put her phone to her ear and suddenly the room filled with cute voice as she said, “Hello, Oppa?”

Hyewon held back her laughter seeing Yena and Chaewon’s expression. Even after a long time, both of them still can’t stand the baby-like voice from Sapphire owner. Especially when this meeting about marketing must be bored the hell out of them.

“Next month Sapphire will release the last series of Sapphire Crown. Are you interested in working with us?” Miss Lee put her phone with loudspeaker on the table, deliberately leaving their conversation open for others to hear.

“Do you want Symphony to launch a new cellphone with the Sapphire Crown theme?”

“You know me so well, Oppa.” Miss Lee smiled and walked to the refrigerator in the corner to get a can of beer. “As you know, right now Sapphire Crown is so popular in the market. Imagine how much profit you will get if you cooperate with us.”

“Sounds tempting, Sunny-ah. But, is Chrysalis Village not enough for you, huh?”

Chaewon’s eyes narrowed when she heard Chrysalis Village being mentioned. Instantly her boredom replaced with interest.

“More than enough.” Miss Lee laughed and sat back in her chair. “After this, I will expand the market of the Chrysalis Village concept to Europe.”

Chaewon snorted and shook her head. So this is the reason why her cousin gladly accepted the punishment from her dad. Once again, Evangeline Kim is going to be a dirty player who has two roles at the same time. An Architect for Supernova and Architecture 11.

“Give me some discount for a complex in the European market and we will be even.”

Miss Lee grinned at the offer. “Deal.”

“Thank you, Sweetheart. Let me know when our lawyer can meet, I will arrange my schedule and see you.”

“It’s a pleasure working with you, Kim Heechul-ssi. Have a good day,” Miss Lee laughed with amusement before finishing the conversation.

“Is that Casey Kim?” Hyewon asked curiously.

Miss Lee nodded.

“Is it always that easy every time you offer a business contract?” Hyewon asked curiously. She remembered the first time they worked together with Miss Lee, how the woman just talked casually to them. Hyewon thought it was because they were newcomers in the industry and she wanted to make them not too nervous, but as what happened earlier, Miss Lee just did the same thing to Casey Kim, CEO of Symphony, the largest electronic company in South Korea.

“Not all the time,” Miss Lee shrugged. “It’s just that he’s my longtime friend. And he also likes games and happens to be one of the Crowners, so why not ask him to help us? This is win-win for Symphony and Sapphire.” Miss Lee gulped down the beer in her hand. “All right, Kim Taeyeon will hold a concert at Madison Square Garden this weekend so I’ll be in New York until next week. But you can contact me anytime and tell me anything about Sapphire Crown. Have a nice day, Kids,” said Miss Lee as she stood up from her chair and looked at them with a smile, which they bowed at her in return.

She left the meeting room and letting Yena release a sigh of relief.

“I didn’t expect her to finish the meeting this quickly.” Yena pulled the sleeve of her shirt to look at the watch. “Only half an hour and she managed to open a new business at the same time. Brilliant!”

“Money and Sunny Lee are best friend. She knows how to get them, manage them, and she would lies down in her apartment all day long with her pets and the money would keep flowing to her account.” Hyewon chuckled but stopped when she saw her phone vibrating on the table. She immediately picked it up when she saw Yujin’s name plastered there.

“What’s that, Unnie?” Chaewon leaned over and looked at a coin in Yena’s palm. “You kept playing it since earlier.”

“I found it in my pocket.” Yena reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out three other coins. “Probably belong to the previous occupant of my room at the hotel and was accidentally put in my jacket pocket by the housekeeper. I hope this is not something valuable for the owner.”

Chaewon nodded and back to focus on her laptop, letting Yena playing the coins in her hand and observed the engraving on each side. She frowned when she realized the symbols engraved there looked quite familiar. Yena pulled her shirt sleeve back and removed her watch. She looked at the mark on her wrist and brought one side of the coin closer to her wrist. She gasped when she saw one of the coin carved a mark that was the same as hers.

An Earth symbol.

Gimpo Airport, Gimpo

Wednesday, September 17th, 2025

“Have they met?” Sakura’s fingers traced the edge of the cup before reaching for the handle to sip the honey tea that was still warm. Her face looked serious waiting for an answer from someone who contacted her.

“Yes, they have met.”

“How was Yujin’s reaction? Any screaming, crying, nor hugging Wonyoung?”

“No, Miss An did nothing. She carried the meeting as usual after the introduction of new talents but the both were not involved in any conversation during the meeting.”

Sakura frowned at the information. Yujin was calm and that was beyond her expectations. Knowing Yujin’s traits, she thought Yujin would scream and run to hug Wonyoung. Or at least cry to see the younger girl’s appearance, or even leave the meeting and look for The Elder or Delta Team in Gallia to ask for an explanation. Anything but calm. This Yujin is not Yujin that she used to know.

“But Miss Jang invited Miss An to speak in private after the meeting was over. I don’t know what they were talking about but Miss Jang looked nervous and serious when talking with Miss An.”

“And Yujin? What did she do?”

“She did nothing, Miss Miyawaki. Miss An looked calm and she listened to everything Miss Jang said. After that, they rejoined the others at the Secretariat of College Council.”

Sakura took a deep breath and wet her lower lip. Her eyes caught Chaeyeon who had just entered the café. She raised a hand to give a signal to Chaeyeon about her whereabouts. Chaeyeon saw her and walked to her table.

“Do you know where The Leaders are? Since earlier I could not contact them.”

“I think Miss Lee and Miss Kwon are still with The Elder because this morning I saw their car in Gallia.”

“Okay, just continue your work. Call me if anything happens.” Sakura disconnected and put her phone on the table. “Have you had lunch?” she asked Chaeyeon who only ordered snacks and drinks.

Chaeyeon nodded and leaned her back on the sofa.

“Have you eaten yet?” Chaeyeon asked back, but still staring to her phone screen.

Sakura sighed. “You think I can eat peacefully in this situation? The Elder let Wonyoung come back to Seoul and meet Yujin, and that means Wonyoung will also meet The Pillars. Can you imagine what would happen if they knew that Wonyoung was still alive?”

“Kang Hyewon and Choi Yena will beat me up, even Yujin will probably do the same thing. I deserve their wrath over the lies I did,” Chaeyeon answered calmly.

“You weren’t really lying,” Sakura brushed aside quickly. “And you did it for their sake.”

“Yes, but I stayed silent and never tell them about Wonyoung’s state. I chose to stay with my lover and be on The Elder’s side. It makes no difference. They must feel betrayed by their own team, by me.”

Chaeyeon turned to stare at the glass wall. She could see the crowd of reporters and fans who shouted the name of an Idol who had just returned from her tour. It usually happens at the airport. Chaeyeon smiled and shook her head at the moment their eyes meet. The Idol’s warm gaze and cheeky smile that Chaeyeon used to know for a long time still lingering on her face. Chaeyeon refrained herself from returning the idol’s hand that waved to her and looked away. Instead, she grabbed the cup of coffee in front of her and took a sip. Her gaze returned to Sakura who was seen contacting someone. From her gestures, Chaeyeon knew that the older girl was trying to contact her girlfriend.

“Do you trust your girlfriend?” Chaeyeon’s question so suddenly made Sakura reflexively turn off the connection.

“I love her.”

This time Chaeyeon laughed. “You did not answer my question, Miss Miyawaki. Until when will you continue to avoid this topic? Are you really afraid about the truth behind the lies?”

“I don’t understand what you’re saying.” Sakura looked at Chaeyeon nervously. She tried to maintain a cold expression on her face but her gesture betrayed her. Her fingers were obviously trembled, and Sakura quickly put them on her lap to avoid Chaeyeon’s eyes.

“Why do we live like this?” Chaeyeon smiled sadly. “I’m trying to understand what’s really happening and I think my mind is too naive to understand.”

“We are different, Chaeyeon-ah. We were gifted and it is in line to the responsibilities we have.”

“Responsibility?” Chaeyeon snorted at that. “If you want to talk about responsibility, then how about we talk about that night?”

Sakura stared at Chaeyeon. “What do you mean?”

“I always felt that that night happened because of the intervention of The Elder,” Chaeyeon sighed. “The Elder wanted them dead so they let the Necromancers sneak out to Astreaia and forbid us −Omega Team from leaving Gallia, they forbid us to help our own teammates. I, no, we- ALL. OF. US saw the sign that Wonie sent that night. They needed our help but we ignored them because The Elder ordered us to. You- The Delta Team are the ones who should thank The Pillar because if it wasn’t for them, we would have lost Wonyoung in Astreaia. They have suffered enough because we told them that Wonyoung died, and The Elders made it worse by blaming them for Wonyoung’s death. If Wonyoung didn’t have two stones at that time, I’m sure she would have died. Now, can you call us- yourself being responsible?”

Sakura massaged the side of her head, feeling the headache coming. “Well, then who is it?”

Chaeyeon’s eyes narrowed at Sakura’s question.

“You can’t sneak out to Astreaia by yourself, Chae. Who went with you that night?”

“I’m an Omega Team and you’re part of the Delta Team. We are not in the same boat, should I answer that?”

“See…” Sakura leaned back and smiled bitterly at Chaeyeon’s answer. “You are the one who don’t trust us.”

“After what you did to them, should I trust you? Should I trust the Delta Team?” Chaeyeon’s hand clenched tightly and Sakura knew, she touched the forbidden spot with this conversation. The sweet and gentle Lee Chaeyeon has changed to cold and loner Chaeyeon. Sakura realized that a long time ago and Chaeyeon who had interacted with her for the last five years was Chaeyeon who was trying hard to keep aside her ego to stay by Wonyoung’s side, to look after her.

Sakura sighed and leaned toward Chaeyeon.

“I trust my girlfriend and I love her, if that is the answer you want to hear.” Sakura did not take her eyes off Chaeyeon. “Learn to trust them, Chaeyeon-ah. Kaeun Unnie and Eunbi Unnie knew where you went that night. They knew you violated The Elder’s orders and they protected you. They protected the Omega Team by saying you were injured because of the Necromancers attack at Gallia.”

Chaeyeon looked away, seemed uneasy after hearing what Sakura said. Of course Chaeyeon knew what the leaders had done for the Omega Team, but still, trusting them is another story.

“Kaeun Unnie was the first person to be by Yujin’s side and saved her. She always defends you every time you cause trouble and asks The Elder not to punish you. I know you don’t like hearing this but Eunbi Unnie who−”

“Wonyoung is the only reason why I remain still until now,” Chaeyeon interrupted, not wanting to hear anything Sakura said.

“Stupid! You can’t even say anything to Omega Team. Do you think you can solve this problem by yourself?”

“You think I let myself to be in this circle of lies for years without a plan?”

Sakura tightly closed her jaw. She took a deep breath and exhaled. She look tired with their conversation.

“Whatever you have planned, I hope you won’t hurt them. I will not forgive you if you hurt them. Especially Lee Kaeun or Kwon Eunbi.” Sakura looked into Chaeyeon’s eyes, looking so sincere with her words. “You and Eunbi Unnie used to be a happy couple before that day happened. Both of you share your birthstones, you bound in a fate, a pure destiny, but you keep making her hurt. Can you end your relationship with Eunbi Unnie and get out of her life if you just make her as a tool to carry out your plan? Whatever it is, Eunbi Unnie doesn’t deserve such treatment. She really loves you, Chae.”

Sakura stood up from her chair and walked away from the table.

“Then how about you? Can you tell her about the bond? Tell her about what happened before that night!”

Chaeyeon’s question made Sakura stop in her tracks.

“Lee Chaeyeon stop. Please, don’t. Please stay still until Wonyoung remembers everything.” She turned around and looked at Chaeyeon who was now walking towards her. The younger girl stopped her step before her. “Does hurting me like this make you happy?”

“I’m not, and I know you’ve suffered enough with this situation. I will keep silent but not for you. I did it for her.” Chaeyeon stared at Sakura. “Stop worrying about me because I know exactly what I’m going to do. You should be worry about yourself. You know for sure this story isn’t over. You know this story isn’t as simple as a bedtime stories that changes so easily every night. Today is a new page. They have met for the second chance. Now we return to the first page and I hope you remember that love and fate are two different things. Can you defeat your fate and fight for your love? Or… Will you be able to let go of your love and accept your destiny? Sadly, not every story has a happy ending and I’m not sure you can do that, Unnie. You can’t write the end of your story yet.”

Amethyst Saga University

Wednesday, September 17th, 2025

“I’m still at the College Council, Unnie. Where are you?” Yujin said while looking at the park beside the Secretariat Office where the others gathered in small groups to discuss their performances.

“We’re almost there. Is your meeting over?” Hyewon’s voice came across the phone.

“Yeah,” Yujin answered, her eyes were locked to one certain person who seemed talking so seriously with Jiheon and Gahyeon. “You all are coming together?”

“Yeah, we just finished the meeting with Miss Lee. Yuri and Minjoo will come after their work is finished. What do you think about dinner at Turchase?”

Yujin snorted at that, momentarily forgot about Wonyoung. “Stop using the cousin title to get a table, Unnie. You’ve been giving too much trouble for Mina Unnie.” I’m not even sure you will have appetite after you arrive here, Unnie.

“Yah, Mina was the one who invite us to come to Turchase, and she especially invited you to come, she said she wants to treat you a dinner as your birthday present.

Yujin chuckled. You wouldn’t even think of visiting Turchase if you knew what just happened, Unnie.

“Can we gather at KimKim Unnie’s apartment? I’m tired and I’m craving Korean food, Unnie, please?”

“You? Tired? I can’t believe it.” Hyewon’s mocking voice made Yujin snorted.

“I arrived at midnight last night, and my sleep was disturbed by Jiheon this morning. I have been here since noon and I’m really sleepy and tired and in need to be spoiled, Unnie.”

Hyewon laughed out loud over the phone, and Yujin thought how that laugh could be turn into shock and sad or maybe cry when Hyewon arrived later and Yujin already felt bad.

“Alright, I’ll ask Chaewon. Give me a minute.”

For a moment, Yujin can hear a muffled sound on the phone which she believes is Hyewon talking to Yena and Chaewon.

While waiting for Hyewon’s answer, Yujin walked towards the park. Yujin’s eyes narrowed as she realized some strange people were watching her. With slow movements she moves around with a quick look catching the suspicious movements around her. It is not difficult for her to do that considering that currently only The College Council members, event organizers, and performers are still in the College Council.

“Okay, Chaewonie said yes,” said Hyewon on the phone. “Because our baby wants Korean food, we will go to Kimkim’s apartment tonight. I will tell Minjoo and Yuri to head straight there.” Hyewon sounded enthusiastic. “We almost there. Bye, Yujin.”

Yujin put her phone in her pocket and about to approaching Doah and Yuna. But she stopped when Gahyeon called her.

“Yujin-ah, come here!” Gahyeon waved her hand asking Yujin to come closer.

But Yujin stayed on her spot and didn’t move. Seeing that, Jiheon who was next to Gahyeon join in calling for her.

“Yah! An Yujin!! Come here!”

Yujin took a deep breath. Approaching Gahyeon and Jiheon means approaching the stranger but familiar girl who is with them and that is the one thing Yujin is most avoiding for now. Not when she still trying to control her emotion. But she didn’t want her friends to notice what happened so Yujin gave in and walked to them.

“What’s wrong?” Yujin stood in front of them who looked amazed at the laptop screen in front of her.

“This is truly unbelievable! UNBELIEVABLE!” Jiheon literally screamed beside her, making Yujin flinched. But she just stared at her, asking for more explanation.

“Look at this, Yujin-ah!” said Gahyeon as she pointed at the laptop screen.

Yujin stared at it and found it was photos of paintings and she’s very familiar with every one of it. Uneasily, she asked, “What is this? Who painted this?”

“Wonyoung,” said Gahyeon, and Yujin widen her eyes. “Wonyoung painted the same scenery as the photos you published on your website! Can you believe this?!” Gahyeon almost screamed on her ears, but her ears are the last thing Yujin worried now.

Next to them, Wonyoung was standing and looking at them, as shocked as Jiheon and Gahyeon. “Sunbaenim, is it true? You have the same photos as my paintings?”

Yujin didn’t have time to answer Wonyoung because Jiheon almost shoved her tablet to Wonyoung. She opened the ‘Once In A Blue Moon’, Yujin’s website where she uploaded all the photos, and showing the photos with the same views and angles as what Wonyoung painted were displayed perfectly.

“Oh my goodness!” Wonyoung looked stunned as well as amazed. “Sunbaenim… You− Wow!” Wonyoung looked lost for words. “How−”

“What if we put your photos and Wonyoung’s paintings are displayed side by side in the exhibition? This will be an amazing work, Yujin-ah.” Jiheon looks excited.

“The work created by human hands and the scope of the camera lens. A brilliant idea, Baek Jiheon! You are the best!” Gahyeon couldn’t hide her enthusiasm.

“I don’t want to do that.” Yujin’s answer made her friends stare sharply. “I have already published my photos. Nothing special if you just want to put my photos and Wonyoung’s paintings side by side.”

“Do you have any other ideas, Sunbaenim?” Wonyoung asked cautiously. The reaction Yujin showed made her feel a little intimidated.

Yujin smiled awkwardly and took out her tablet. She opened her folder and showed something that made the three people who surrounded her gasped out loud in awe.

“I have every photo angle of this painting. We can place Wonyoung’s painting on the center and my photos will surround her painting to form a complete picture like a puzzle. Maybe this looks selfish because this concept will use a lot of my photos, but doesn’t this method have more aesthetic value?”

“Oh, sh*t! An Yujin!” Gahyeon covered her mouth with her palm. Feel amazed by the idea Yujin put forward.

“An Yujin! You’re a genius! Oh my God! I can’t believe you can make me- oh my God!” Jiheon shook her head with disbelief.

“How about you? I won’t force this concept to you if you have other ideas.” Yujin looked at Wonyoung who was still staring at her tablet.

“That’s really a brilliant idea, Sunbaenim. Let’s try!” Wonyoung smiled broadly with Yujin’s idea. “These photos and paintings will tell more story and meaning if they are related to one another.”

Yujin nodded with a faint smile.

“But, Sunbaenim, I—”

“Unnie.” Yujin interrupted and brought her eyes to Wonyoung. “Just call me Unnie. Didn’t you call them Unnie?” Yujin pointed at Jiheon and Gahyeon.

Wonyoung smiled again and nodded her head.

“So?” Yujin signaled Wonyoung to continue her explanation.

“My paintings are painted on the different size of canvas, Unnie. Is that okay? How about the size of your photos?”

“It’s okay, Wonyoung-ah. Yujin is very experienced at this. She can do it.” Gahyeon smiled broadly at Yujin.

Wonyoung doesn’t believe Gahyeon’s words. She was still staring at Yujin waiting for the older girl’s answer.

“Yeah, no problem. All you have to do is send me a picture of your painting and tell me the size of the canvas you are using. I will arrange my photos later.”

“Cool!” Wonyoung squealed happily.

“Hmm… So, in this concept, Yujin’s photos will become a frame that surrounds Wonyoung’s painting, is that so?” Jiheon asked to be sure.

Wonyoung and Yujin nodded together.

“What do you think the title will be for this concept?”

For a few moments Wonyoung and Yujin fell silent while staring at the painting on the screen.

“Syzygy.” At the same second, that one word slid together from their lips and made Jiheon and Gahyeon gape.

But the silence between them was broken when a car was seen entering the parking lot and gasped could be heard around them as Yena got out of the passenger seat. Soon Hyewon and Chaewon also got out of the car and made students around the park look at them in awe.

“Unnies!” Yujin called out loudly and waved her hand to let them know her whereabouts. The three of them turned and Yujin couldn’t hide her smile when she saw the faces of the three of them turn pale.

“Chaewon Unnie! Yena Unnie! Hyewon Unnie!” Wonyoung’s voice made Yujin close her eyes and take a deep breath.

She opened her eyes and the world is like stopping and only fixated on one figure. She saw Wonyoung running towards Hyewon, Yena, and Chaewon. The younger girl’s long legs quickly brought her in front of the three. They were still stunned when Wonyoung enthusiastically hugged them one by one.

“Unnie! What are you doing here?” Wonyoung’s voice was cheerful. “Do you know if I’m studying here?”

“W-Wonyoung-ah…” Yena looked confused, but her hands didn’t let go of Wonyoung’s waist.

“Unnie, did you come to pick me up? But I came here by driving my car.” Wonyoung loosened her arms to look at the three. “I really miss you guys!” This time she hugged Chaewon tightly.

“Have you met Yujin?” Still confused, Hyewon tried to control herself. Just like Yena, she hugged Wonyoung tightly.

“Yujin Sunbaenim− eh, Yujin Unnie? Of course I’ve met her! She is my senior here. Do you know her?” Wonyoung’s eyes sparkled when she learned that her Unnies knew a senior of her.

“Wonyoung-ah… But Yujin… You and Yujin-” Hyewon did not continue her words when her eyes saw Yujin put her index finger on the lips and shook her head. She ask Hyewon not to continue her words.

“Do you know if me and Yujin Unnie will collaborate in the exhibition later? You have to come, Unnies. We will make a spectacular concept!” Wonyoung was too enthusiastic to realize the changes in the atmosphere around her. She continued to talk with the same enthusiasm.

“Oh, where are Minjoo Unnie and Yuri Unnie? I want to meet them. I miss you! I really miss you!!” Wonyoung clinged at Hyewon, one thing she used to do to Hyewon a lot. Old habit die hard.

Hyewon could only scratch her head and smile at Wonyoung. The same thing is done by Yena and Chaewon. Even so Yujin could see their hands clenched tightly next to their bodies with teary eyes. The three of them are seen trying hard to control their emotions.

I go home first, Unnies. Let’s talk about this later. Yujin turned to Jiheon and Gahyeon, said goodbye to them and walked towards her car. She deliberately lied to her unnies by saying her car broke down and asked them to pick her up. In fact, she wanted her Unnies to meet directly with Wonyoung without the need to involve her.

Yujin-ah What happened? Yujin heard Chaewon’s voice in her ears.

Don’t say my name in front of Wonyoung as if I’ve known her for a long time, Unnie.

What do you mean? This time Hyewon’s voice was heard.

Wonyoung doesn’t recognize me. Unconsciously, Yujin’s hands were clenched tightly at her sides. Jang Wonyoung doesn’t remember me, Unnie. I don’t know what happened but An Yujin wasn’t in her past. I’m not exist in her life. But it’s okay. At least I’m relieved because she still recognizes you guys.

What happened to her?

I don’t know, Yena Unnie. I haven’t discussed anything with her. All of this is too sudden for me. Yujin got in the car and started the engine. Wonyoung is under surveillance. I don’t know who they are, but I think now I know why The Elder let us leave Gallia. They have a way that will make us come back. They have our kryptonite. They have Jang Wonyoung. We should have realized that from the start. Just stay with her, Unnie. There will be lots of things we have to talk about after this.
